These Beloved, Old Dogs!

by Radko Vacek

Age Group: Adult

"Mr. Good Bear!" - as I called him,
c 2000 - November 1, 2012

"To see a world in a grain of sand" 1
And Yin and Yang in a pair of dogs:

I loved Bear. Bear bit me. I forgave him.
Bear was a Chow. They are watchdogs.
Guarding is their Divine duty.
Duty makes the dog. What a dog, that Bear!
Bear moves me now, to tears!

I remember Bear, for longer than I quite remember.
He was this black "bear" with long, fluffy fur,
Bushy tailed, coming to the fence.
He belonged to Carl, then to Chris his neighbor too.
I hope he thought of me as, "friend, "
But if I was just the dude with the treats,
That worked fine too! Dear Hunter, the sweetheart
Labrador, was with Bear until April of 2011,
When she went as, "the hunter home from the hill." 2
She always grinned, then barked, like saying,
"Come on, quit teasing! You got more bologna!"
Always she was ready with a "kiss" for me!
After she went, life got lonelier for Bear.
They made quite a match, she cream-colored
Like the light of day compared to him,
Who was black as the night. He did miss her!

Bear was the Yang, male and rougher, but the Yang
Always has some Yin, so I loved the sweetness
In Bear's bitter bite! What is a good magician
Without delight, or a Chow without the bite?
Once, his family said, "You don't have to stand by the fence.
You can come into the yard." I did. Bear loved to attack
A tire in the yard. I rolled it and said, "Get that tire!" He did!!!
One morning, about three months before his last,
While Bear was attacking the tire, I bent over a bit
And said, "You get that tire!" I went a bit
Too far for Bear. He took it as teasing.
He was right, I was wrong. Teasing was a joke
For Hunter, but not for Bear. He got me instead!
All is well that ends well. I am not dead,
Nor did my devotion die! I kept dropping by,
Except now I was exiled. Good fences make good dogs?
Safer maybe! I kept up the daily,
Petting ritual and the porterhouse-flavored,
"Real meat" treats. But soon Bear started going downhill.
His eyes got very sore, and then his coat thinned
To nearly nothing. Where was his winter coat?!
Even his tail stopped being bushy.
I tried giving him vitamins wrapped in bologna.

On November 2, Bear was not there.
Chris, his new co-owner, treated him to pizza
Out in the woods. While Bear enjoyed it,
Chris shot him. I trust that Chris was a good shot.
Beloved Bear now is dearly beloved!
It is hard to believe. In my heart, there is an empty spot;
Bear was the last of the old dogs.
I gave the half-full bag of treats to the dogs
At the shelter. I didn't give myself a cry
Until now. I trust that Bear is out guarding at those Gates,
Or hunting in the Elysian Fields of the legendary greats,
Or starting a new life - to celebrate!
