"ROOM FOR RENT - no room for magic"

Old pets, old masters, old homes, old, old, old!
Those old, four-legged buddies by the fence
Are now remembered, and praised in past tense.
Many of their old masters have died too.
They were true masters of a way not lived
Much anymore, the way of take and give:
Taking time to talk as good neighbors do,
As the makers of a true neighborhood,
And to receive as a part of giving.
Their homes from the 1890s get sold
To landlords with trouble renting them out.
These quaint houses end up going the route
Of abuse and neglect, and boarding up
For coming demolition. "Nothing gold 1
Can stay." Worthier than gold are old homes,
For the spirit of love which they may hold!
But who values old masters, let alone
The houses which they turned into true homes?
The magic will be sacrificed to raise
Apartment buildings. What a loss to all!
