Thank you so much, Oh World, for all the love!
Sometimes it was so undeserved, and yet
My charms still enchanted you. Should we get
Love as a treat for being great? Life proves
That, if greatness comes, the World has been moved
Often to that loving patience, which lets
The person live and learn, thus to forget
Bounds to become that which dreams are made of!
To claim greatness first often is to think
That you are so great, provoking the hate
Of the World, thus neither beloved nor great!
So I do my best to be loveable;
Through your kind regards, I hope to make links
To the stars, and do what all I'm able.
Author's Notes: It wasn't so much that the students of Socrates loved him for being great, I think, but more so that he became great through the love of his students, who loved him for his humility.
