Love,

by Radko Vacek

Age Group: Adult

Love,
Made to bless you, wrought to praise,
May you live on, in this braid!

Although the beloved no longer is,
In a way he comes alive with
All the vitality from your idea, of
The goodness which was his!
Bring him back to life with
The vividness of your memory,
With the sacred power of love!

Although your devil always is
The shadow of you, kill him
By calling him so and drawing
Out his life, to enliven your idea
Of evil, thus to create a utopia
In which you shine like an angel,
Maybe even the fairest of all!

Isn't it just like the fairest angel,
To keep the spirit of the good
Alive, lovingly with a spell?
Yes, braid the eternal, triple cord,
By which the departed is restored,
And blessed with immortality.
Even all three Fates,
Should not stop the great!

Author's Notes: How appropriate for this, on All Soul's Day! I have no problem at all with the idea that spiritualism works, since it isn't that hard to see roughly how it works. It's the same principle as that which people use to change their lives, but just in reverse.

Consider the alcoholic. He must look at his reflection and say, "I am an alcoholic." Yes, in a sense he always will be: even just a drop and he cannot stop. His alcoholic Siamese twin always will be there. But in his self-confession, he draws vitality away from his wicked twin, and into his idea of wrong.

Spiritualism is like AA, but in reverse. Instead of drawing vitality away from the alcoholic "twin" into the idea of evil, you draw vitality away from the idea of good into the memory of the beloved deceased. Whereas with alcoholism you sort of kill the wicked twin, with spiritualism you sort of revive the good beloved. Both are a matter of shifting the vital energy, the difference between the two being the direction of the shift.
