A Pure Day's Eye
by Radko Vacek
Age Group: Adult
The man descends the path to the floodplain
As he thinks, never will I laugh again.
Having lost everything he loved, no more
Accompanied by the dogs he cared for
In much of his free time, he feels alone,
Without the purpose he so long had known.
The fluting of the wood thrush has turned sad,
Its notes lacking the delight they once had.
Sitting down despondent upon a log,
He notices some mushrooms by the bog.
He picks one and, with a shrug, he eats it,
Thinking, if I die, so gladly be it.
Suddenly all around him starts to whirl.
He feels spun into a different world.
He scans this troupe of daisies just ahead,
White their petals around their yellow heads.
Gently dancing in the breeze he sees them,
When he hears one singing, "Now's the season
Of spring again! Giving it all that's mine,
I unfurl my petals for the sunshine!"
The poor fellow cannot believe his ears.
"What's happened to me!" He's driven to tears.
The daisy speaks. You were crazy before.
The mushroom works the magic to restore
You to the sanity of hearing me.
I'm a day's eye, an awesome thing to be!
The other blossoms say how we are poor
When we get our petals plucked. No, I'm pure,
Cleansed of wanton desires. My needs so few,
Welcoming the sun is my dream come true,
While at dusk my petals close. Well I sleep.
Sow simple needs and content you shall reap.
You have lived simply. Why not be content?
You never lost your goodness of intent,
So you have gained after all! A day's eye
Is mine. Now close your eyes too, but don't die.
We both grow stronger every day we live,
So the seeds of coming hope let us give!
