Sitting on the step, Hogan is his name.
"Homeless please help", go the words on his sign.
If I had come the way by which he came,
His circumstances might well have been mine.
"On Saturday, Toots", his dog, "got startled,
Ran under a semi, and got flattened."
Just listening, I feel brokenhearted.
Never should man's best friend come to that end.
"I had that dog for eight years, always by
My side. Now, just like that, she's gone." He weeps.
My heart knows the feeling. I wonder why
The world's so? Are there secrets some God keeps?
Hogans are made to greet the rising sun.
Given how life goes, what else can be done?
Author's Notes: I wrote the poem, but Hogan lived it. I meet him on the corner on most days. We both miss Toots, and hope one of the secrets is a heaven she is happily guarding!
