The View From Over

by Radko Vacek

Age Group: Adult

To admire the snow upon a mountain
Is one thing. To encounter it, climbing,
Is another. To use words to attain
The status of a climber is binding
Aspirants to stay below, misinformed.
You must soar with the hawk to know its flight,
And feel your spiritual feathers warmed
By rising to experience the sunlight.

Often it's not the big shots who improve
The world. How can they change what they don't know?
Ignorance evades the power of love.
Who knows life admiring it from below?
Simple people doing good day by day,
Step by step climb the mountain to the peak.
Don't simple songs they sing along the way
Work better than a song in ancient Greek?

The professors lecture. I would listen,
Having been young and foolish. Wiser now,
I think they stood under, without vision
Enough to know that which the heart may know.
Their God is Intelligence. This they hide,
While they do the cruelest sacrifice
Of animals, and put on airs denied
To those who, living simply, quite suffice.

"No ordinary person can do it",
The prophets of limitation declared.
Challenged by it, I chose to pursue it.
Looking Cerberus in the eye, I dared!
The best poems don't reflect a great brain,
Only fingers daring to grasp the tail
Of a dragon, to reach a higher plane.
Willpower succeeds where brainpower fails.

To those of us without a fair IQ,
Society has persisted giving
Such conditions we gladly never knew,
Making their lives hardly worth the living.
Sometimes their most basic needs are not met,
Starved their bodies and not loved their spirits.
They suffer for what little care they get,
Such as getting bathed, until they fear it.

To honor the child for its intelligence
Is nothing, to care about one crying,
Compassionate. To twist benevolence
Into mere pity, for a child trying
To walk on a leg so weak that it breaks,
Is sacrilege. His spirit yearns to soar,
To feel the sun shine as well for his sake
As mine. Without love, what else is life for?
