The Courage to Love
by Radko Vacek
Age Group: Adult
How sad death is,
Yet it is as natural as can be,
At the very heart of life.
After his dog died,
My dad said it's better not to have a dog.
I didn't take his advice.
Taking in a number of abandoned and abused dogs.
Being compassionate opens us up to getting hurt.
When I visited my relatives in Slovakia in 1992,
I met the daughter of my mother's neighbor,
A lady who hid a Jew throughout Nazi occupation.
Such stories surely do deserve happy endings,
But sometimes they come to the saddest.
Some of us don't even think of dangers,
But are compassionate because it is the right thing to do.
More importantly, some do know the dangers,
But compassion gives them the courage to reach a higher plane.
My highest hope is to feel such compassion!
