A Myth of Love and Hope
by Radko Vacek
Age Group: Adult
We all love Eurydice, whom we know
As Hope, and we share her lover's sorrow.
Orpheus, once hopeful, despairing now,
Almost reviving her, you lost her. How?
Impatiently misjudging, you turned back
Too soon. Yet your nature had other lacks.
You realized that no one has ever
Revived, so you questioned your endeavor.
For a breath, you doubted, can I do it,
When no one else ever has pursued it?
Your doubt in love, for just a spell, crippled
You from fondling again her fair nipples.
For a heartbeat, you wondered, should I face
Dangerous Death alone for her embrace?
Your love of self, for just a flash, eclipsed
Your fiery desire for her moist lips.
Her lips, like petals of a budding rose
To you, were turned into what no one knows
On this earthly plane. You idealized
Her into a sight beyond what your eyes,
Mortal though divine, possibly could see
As when she lived, hers now, eternity.
