Hope for Hope
by Radko Vacek
Age Group: Adult
The Lord of Death seems to bend the Great Law,
As Orpheus enchants him with his lyre,
And grants the musician the love he lost,
Eurydice. They climb up from the mire.
As Orpheus returns, the branches bend
Gently in the breeze, to temper the heat,
And all of the natural world now sends
Blessings to them, so that their lips may meet.
The Lord has attached this tormenting string:
Orpheus may not see Eurydice
Before she stands in the light of being.
If he does, she goes to eternity.
Poor Orpheus turns just a shade too soon!
He sees her loving eyes that, like the dusk,
Fade into the darkness. They yearn to kiss,
But Eurydice drops into the gloom.
Orpheus stands, embracing nothingness.
But could it be there is hope after all?
While the Lord Death has played a cruel jest
Upon the lovers Nature wanted blessed,
I yet have faith that Love may win the war,
For Evil has such weakness at its core!
