Straight?

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

Why am I considered straight?
Is it the chivalry?
The kindness?
The pain it gives me, to find out
Iím known as straight.
I donít have anything against straights,
Itís just Iím not one.
But they think I am, so in their eyes,
I am.
What to do to restore my image?
I donít know. Wish I did.
ĎCause now Iím known as straight.

Author's Notes: In response to the poem, "Gay?" by Waterhawk, located at:

http://www.witchvox.com/poetry/dt_po2.html?a=usny&id=13000

Dearest Waterhawk, even if people think you are something you are not, it doesn't change who you are or turn you into whatever they think you are. You are still the person you have always been, and their inquiries to your character are probably a request in disguise, asking you how it is that you are strong enough, and have enough integrity, to be who you are without succumbing to peer pressure to be someone you are not. I believe everyone secretly wishes to be who they are, but are afraid of rejection. Fitting in with a group (by being someone you are not) is artifical and will not stand the test of time and Truth.

Perhaps the answer to your question is hidden in it's complimentary polarity, shown above. Will you let people define how you "should" be, or will you be yourself and set an example? You can be both chivalrous and kind, and not Gay, all at the same time if that's who you are. Don't ever let anyone talk you out of being kind and chivalrous, because those qualities are shared with the Knight in Shining Armor, who wants most of all to win the love of the beautiful Damsel.
