The Sanctity of Divorce

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Some people take for granted Their companionship in life Any man and any woman Can become husband and wife
The rest remain unrecognized To face much opposition From members of society Who love such ammunition
I watch the hasty marriages All based on "love", of course; Supported by the church and state -- And ending in divorce...!
They never stopped to think about The Gays they keep oppressed Why some can stay together Despite hatred from the rest
Despite a ruined childhood In isolated despair Unsure if they should be so sure Of those who claim to care
Despite having genuine need To seek the Higher Power Exiled by all churches Life destroyed within an hour
Despite the friends and family Who insist how much they care Come out, reach out, to be disowned With loved ones found nowhere
Despite the negativity Society has for Gays; No laws to bind, but love remains, For love has its own ways!
I don't need the church and state To rear their hateful claws; I know love comes from the heart, Not morally stigmatic laws.
Society has much to learn But not from zealous preachers, The first is last, the last is first, For Gays are now the teachers!
Author's Notes: Just a little poem about societal ignorance that manifests itself with moral stigma that contradicts itself into oblivion. I am utterly amazed at just how small-minded people can be, in terms of being members of a greater society, but when you take the people aside and view them as individuals, even the ones who seem the most prejudice appear to have a glimmer of love for those they are prejudice against. It all goes to show that there is a marked difference between religious dogma and what the heart recognizes as love and inner light.
I didn't write this to put down Christianity, but the religion has the potential to be so hollow that it makes people listen to what they are told, rather than to what their heart is saying.
I have always believed that any members of society who are continually oppressed for any reason, have the potential of being the most spiritual of all due to the forced introspection they must endure, only to find the light that reassures them they are truly wonderful and beautiful reflections of the Logos.
