Let the Cat Go

Age Group: Adult
Like an unruly child
Who is chasing a cat
Demanding its tail
And just being a brat
By ignoring cat's hissing
And its teeth and sharp claws
The child keeps chasing
To enforce childish laws
As the child is thinking
When the chase is all through
Of how the cat "shall" be
Of what the cat "shall" do --
"The cat shall love me
And its head I shall pat,
The cat shall like tea
And wear a little pink hat."
And this unyielding child
With such visions in mind
Chases cat in a corner
Leaving cat in a bind;
The child too focused
On who cat "shall" be
Lays blame on the cat
For scratches bleeding freely...
Which one may be you,
The child or the cat?
Do you run another down,
Or leave 'em where they're at?
Do not be the child
When the cat tells you "no"
Be adult-like instead,
And let the cat go.
Author's Notes: By writing this poem I am celebrating the anniversary of one year ago today that I stuck up for my own best interests, just like the cat in the poem. Because at that time, there was someone who took pleasure in seeing just how far I could be pushed, and I still remember all the vast but ultimately ignored reasoning I tried in order to maintain my own boundaries with the person. Even though I have found that most people are very reasonable, I have learned you can't reason with unreasonable people. Sorry for ranting, but thanks for reading. :-)
