Coming Out To A Loved One, Part 3

In control of my life,
That's what I am
I don't need the glitz
I don't need the glam
I decide what is right
for only me
I live and let live
Every choice is free
I don't harm another
But I do what's right
Don't challenge my integrity
You won't win the fight
In control of my life
It is only my choice
I am who I am
And will forever rejoice
It's my life to live
Anyone can see
And damned are those
Who tell me how I should be
It's my life to live
And I've surely grown
I make informed decisions
I am on my own
I don't need no one else
If love ain't what they give
In control of my life,
I choose how I live
But if just one moment
Someone shows they care
And respect me for me
I will surely be there
My love ain't for grabs
I do not freely give
Unless it's my decision
That's how I choose to live
I cannot fathom how
How we ever did meet
But to your heart's rhythm
Somehow mine begs to beat
As if paths are irrelevant
You're all I think of
Not so different in the end
If our hearts hold true love.
Author's Notes: While this poem may sound demanding and harsh, let it be known that someone truly loves who I am, and who I've always been. We do not share the same path (he is Christian and made it very clear he wouldn't budge) , but when love is true, it cannot be denied. After all, he is who he is as well, it's who he chooses to be.
Love is not about changing someone. It's about loving them and believing in them for who they are, and equally balanced by the love and respect they show in return, no matter if they don't understand your spiritual path. He may never believe the same things I do, but it doesn't change the fact that the hardest heart in the world has unfolded to someone who cares, don't let my politeness fool you, I just don't let people in that easily. In fact, I'm not even sure how the possibility arose with my love, it just did, and that is that. I don't need to explain, and I have no intention of analyzing it. Sometimes, what is, simply "is".
It's one of the few things I just don't have a scientific explanation for. It's almost as though our spiritual paths are secondary to the way we feel when we're together. We are both mature adults, and we both have enough experience to decide for ourselves what is right. We're both right about a lot of things, and we're both wrong too. It doesn't matter, we have each other and the love that exists transcends everything else.
And I have never loved someone, regardless of his Christian path, as much as I love him. I was once Christian, and I never completely let it go, because it's not entirely wrong about everything. But it is wrong about the nature of love between two commited individuals who happen to be of the same sex.
I would ask you to wish me luck, but I can't even imagine being luckier than I already am. Happy anniversary to my love, just over one year this month. Your love means more to me than you will ever know, but somehow, you knew that. :-) Let's be separate individuals, as we always have been, true to ourselves, and true to each other. I can't imagine being any happier than I am with you. One whole year! And still, it seems like yesterday we met. Unfathomable! For once, I have found someone who is both different and just like me at the same time.
