Charge for New Moon, August 2005

by Thomas Harris
 Age Group: Adult

Our way is a more ancient way... Treat it with respect... Change little, preserve much... It matters not by which code of ethics The Realm around us abides by, Or the lack of any such code, But it does matter which is the Law We together both observe and proclaim, Especially for ourselves. Regardless of how the rest of humanity shall do, We shall be true to the Old Ways, For in them we see both hope and life. We are given over to them By reason of our own choice. We support by ordinances of the Faith To be our Law by common consent. By common consent is our Tradition knit Together into a web of wisdom and pow'r. By rites large and small, We identify ourselves together For both friendship and kinship. These are rites whether they seem to be so, Formally or not, for She hath said: "All acts of love and pleasure are rituals unto Me". Let us not forget this simple truth. By ordianance we are governed, For we have agreed amongst ourselves That this Rule and these teachings Both identify us and bind us together Into one Body, one Tribe... It is by willlingly coming to bow To these precepts that we together come To form this one Tradition, Without anyone pressuring us into submission. It is because we have seen these precepts At work that we know them to be Both a good and solid foundation. We are knit together in common cause, For the mutual strengthening And building up of one another into one Tribe; For the establishment of the principles By which Tribe is known and sustains itself For the kindred to survive and be fruitful.
Joy of Nations! Blessing of the Realm! Cause for shouting and praise Among the Halls of Humankind! Effort given for friends! Whose is the legacy of a thousand angels singing? Dynasties of Fair Blood walk Among the Paths of Humankind. Who has seen the reclaiming of the birthright? Let us declare the liberty which is our birthright. Look to the wild, consider the greenwood. When the times become difficult, Look to the soil beneath your feet And choose the Wisdom of the Old Ways To sustain you in times of distress. What was not found in the Tomes of Remembrance?
We ought always pray forward the cause We hold near our souls. Glory belongs to the warriors of Truth! To pray is one of the works of love. It is the basic labor and primary means Of communication for the person's spirit. Press into prayer as a man Putting his shoulder to the plow. Let the work of it make you sweat Mercy and Grace, as work of the body Makes you pour forth sweat of the brow.
You cannot turn your back on anyone Or anything without turning your back On the One Family, the Great Family. In earnest care the seeds of redemption Are found. It shall be in seeking, And in seeding, that the beginnings Of newness are found. It is prepared! An orchard untended, awaiting these Who have learned to see. Who has not heard it said 'In perfect love and perfect trust'? Wings which were broken shall be mended. They who were wounded shall fly once more. That which was broken cannot be mended Without great expenditure of effort and time. It does not happen without honest working And true effort; for without the hovering Of attention over the subject, The details are worked out. Let us be given good leaders, That the vision be beneficial to all. Behold, there are those who hunger For the food we have at our disposal. Feed them of the bounty, That the bounty might be multiplied. They are open as the blossom we've come to see. They are revealed to the vastness We have not ourselves come to understand. Who are we to deny them? We are welcoming the wayfarer and the seeker alike. This Tradition recognizes the spiritual equality Of every person that is called unto our circles By the Transendant. We recognize the existance Of the One Family of All-That-Is. All that are called to the Circle shall be welcomed, Initiate or Non-Initiate, member of the Tribe or not, And so shall our circles be reknowned for virtue. Essence of things beautiful, Essence of things true! We are not ashamed of what we are, For what we are is beautiful! What we are is magickal! What we are is sacred. The power and presence-- The Being of the Transcendant-- Comes through us and defends it. By this, it is saved. You are placed here For the healing of the Worlds. How long must we undergo healing Before we are healed? Work to establish virtue And chivalry among us. Discern what is beneficial. Beware of things not beneficial. Become familiar with that which is not beautiful, For not everything of beauty is good.
Preparation for ritual adds to the Nature Of the sacrament by virtue of our approach. Ours is a more intense sense of the sacred.
Concerning the problems of unity and openness Which seem to abound: Beware of the tendency which so often manifests, To our common detriment, To close ourselves off from one another In subsequent ocurrence to dissent, Even while must guard the Mysteries. While we are all one great family, And not just we of the Faith, but all of us... And so even in our dissent we must at least strive For some common thread between us. This is not to dismiss the wrongdoings, But to urge us to some higher cause. We have not chosen the lesser thing, For in it we are blessed with hope. Any hope which envelops one party To the exclusion of the other party Can never be seen as true hope, For in the one's lack of hope The other is eventually swallowed and lost. Our hope...that hope which we teach As part of the Mystery...is without Predisposition toward the one or the other... But is accessible to all. In forgetting the common cause, Faith fails, For without the inclusion of all parties, It becomes less than perfect. Our common cause is to be the seeding And nurturing of the Faith Unto maturity and fruition. How great an honor, to tend The Grove in our charge and join With those of like Faith, to view The vastness of our Way. What They see fit to grow In the field of our Faith, Who are we to deny Them? Only They decide which to plant, Which to nurture, and whichto suffer drought....and when... Theirs is the greater labor, Ours the humble deed.
Author's Notes: This charge was channelled for the new moon rite of August 2005. While some of it is directed toward the group I belong to, the rest of it also seemed to be partially applicable to seekers of all paths, thus I include it here.
