The Wolf and the Deer

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

There once was a Wolf and a Deer
Once friends to all it was clear
So different were they
Yet still they would play
Together each day of the year.

One day after many good years
The Deer's eyes welled up with tears
"You, Wolf, I can see
Are not quite like me."
Their friendship now ridden with fears.

"I've learned from you how the Wolf plays
It conflicts with my natural ways
So if you can't be
Exactly like me
I'll go away one of these days."

But the Wolf took a look within,
And said with a heartily grin,
"Accept me for me,
Or an enemy I'll be,
For a friend to you I've always been."

The Deer thought a moment, and said,
"I'd rather make Deer friends instead...
If I can't change you,
Then that's what I'll do!"
And off to new pastures Deer tread.

But in those new pastures of deer
All told her, "You're SO welcome here,
But avoid that Wolf's evil
And avoid us upheaval,
For 'our way' is the most true and clear."

Such wonderful new friends Deer made,
Fun Deer games each day they all played.
The hidden Wolf spied
And each night Wolf cried,
To feel his Deer friend had betrayed.

Deer brainwahsed by popular opinion,
Evolved into simply a minion
Telling wolf-jokes all night
Never feeling contrite
Disgracing Wolf's birthright dominion.

At last the Wolf tried one time more
The Deer's lost friendship to explore.
The Deer said with disgust,
"No Wolf has my trust,
So I'm not your friend anymore!"

But Wolf was both clever and wise,
Making new Wolfy friends as allies...
"If Deer think us vicious,
We'll think them delicious!"
And since then they were, I'd surmise.

Through warring in an endless time lag
Finally one knew to raise the white flag:
A friend to each side
Whom both could confide,
Thus the Wolves became friends with the Stag.

Author's Notes: A symbolic account of those whose primary motivation for joining a particular group is hatred for some other group, all the while claiming to be the "in the right" when in fact the motivation of hatred itself is what will guarantee the group's failure. Strange how the only ones who see this are those in between, who refuse to take any extremist view because of the realization that we all are connected to each other.
