Count Your Blessings
by Phronesus Disegno
Age Group: Adult
Did you know I am diabetic?
As of now, over 23 years
I take insulin many times each day
And you'll never see me in tears.
And I hear of all of these problems
Psychologial issues and more
Would you believe I have my own
Just to live, I must make the score
Oh no, to myself I'm not sorry
And yes, it's hard to just live
But it's every day of my life
To myself, healing is to give
To the youngsters I will support
For they ARE so very hard trying
But adults, to me they must prove
That there's more in the pan still frying
And the ones who are striving so hard
Are the ones I admire the most
They will face the truth of it all
Never haunted by a pitiful ghost
And the ones who learn as they go
To them I give full attention
For they are the ones who will know
All the things I may or may not mention
And the ones who are trying so hard
Are the ones I will love the most
They remind me of my situation
Which is truth, but I'll never boast
And it matters not if they're crazy
Or if they are perfectly sane
The ones who will help themselves
Are the ones my attention will gain
The ones who just want understanding
And the ones who will learn as they go
A friend I will be to survivors
To the ones who simply just "know"
Now you know I am diabetic
All these years I am still alive
And I honor all of my friends
Who for life will continue to strive.
Author's Notes: Don't feel sorry for me, don't you even dare. I almost died several times, in 1983, in 1985, in 1988, in 1994, in 1997, in 2001, and again in 2003, and again this month, December 2005. I have no intention of dying, and I'll fight it no matter how difficult it becomes over the years. I have soft, supple skin, even in my extremeties, and I don't even use Oil of Olay... So there! Are you jealous? Good. You'll get over it. ;-)
It's about time I mentioned it, not even my best friend knows. I mean, he and many others know of my diabetic condition and what to do about it in an emergency, but few know of the occasions I have been one or two nights in the hospital. I don't bother to tell them. I'm not done yet. But each time I get a little closer... that ordeal in 2003 was a doozie, I tell ya'.
I get irritated with some people who are perfectly healthy, and want to end their life. They haven't counted their blessings, maybe they just never learned how. Thanks to a sociologist friend of mine, I can see that perspective.
But I am alive, once again, and it's a helluva lot more than I could do otherwise. Bullsh*t with the alternative. I'm not done yet. And I'm back home. It didn't even interfere with my job, because it happened on a weekend... imagine that... :-) No one realizes how important health insurance can be, until they need it. ;-)
