I Was Good Enough After All

I wondered why it was
You gave me little chance
Almost eight years ago
When we began the dance.
I led the dance at first
For that is what I do;
And when that didn't work,
I tried to follow you.
No matter what I did,
All things I've said and shown,
A missing piece remained,
So I went on my own.
What was it that I did,
Or that I didn't do?
Was I never enough,
Or far too much for you?
Now after these past eight years,
Having strived so much for growth,
We're just a little wiser
And time has changed us both.
You show up from out of nowhere,
(It seems that you have changed)
To tell me how much you cared
For all we once exchanged.
When we began the dance
Almost eight years ago,
I could not understand
But now I think I know.
It was never what I said
Or who I tried to be,
In fact I now believe
That it was never me.
