But then they let me know
How different I am from them
I look within and wonder
But I like myself

Author's Notes: I was once intimidated as a teenager when others looked at me. What was really an opportunity to acknowledge each other's presence in a perfectly acceptable social situation seemed like a threatening stare to me.
Well, that was nearly 20 years ago. I lived my teenage years thinking I really was weird, like I never fit in with everyone else, like I couldn't share the same enthusiasms as everyone else my age did.
Imagine my relief shortly after I turned 30 when I realized I wasn't crazy after all, and when all those years were finally explained -- I have always had a high-functioning autism that most people don't even notice.
Not sure why I decided to write a poem about it. But now that the deed is done, I guess I'll use up my two minutes on the soap box. :-)
