The Word and The Spirit

It's written down on paper
Aloud it's read and heard
The way it simply is,
The nature of The Word.
It's felt within the heart
No sound and yet we hear it
The way that it could be,
The nature of The Spirit.
The Word shall be my guide
But never shall it rule
For Spirit is its balance
Without which I'm a fool.
The Spirit's understanding
I'll demonstrate to all
But with no Word to balance
I'd lose myself and fall.
And when they work together
Is when I notice growth
For balance is achieved
From Word and Spirit both.
Author's Notes: The inspiration for this poem was based on how judges in courts of law sometimes give a break to people, much like a police officer might give someone a warning instead of an actual speeding ticket. I was originally thinking about the "word of the law" and the "spirit of the law" when I wrote this poem.
But then I realized it corresponds with the masculine and feminine aspects of spirituality, the "word" or "logos" being the masculine, and the "spirit" being the feminine. It even corresponds to the God and Goddess, if you like, and how well they work together -- as well as how well they don't work when they are alone and unbalanced by the other.
There may be some Goddess-only covens out there, and for them I cannot disagree because I suspect there is a sincere need for the members to heal from feminine energy after, perhaps, being unbalanced from a real or perceived unhealthy past of over-emphasized masculine energy. But I believe once the healing is in progress or is nearly achieved, that the desire for balance and the respect for both -- as well as a better understanding of the non-specific "both and neither" threshold between the two -- will be obtained and preferred.
