Seeing Through the Mask

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Long back when I first met you So many years ago I knew I'd always love you Though I'd never let you know
You looked to me for guidance But self-love was not yours And just because I cared for you It opened many doors
You learned that you've been worthy Of self-love all along Encouraged by my like for you Uncovering your heart-song
And others started seeing you Because you let them hear Your heart-song gleems for all to see And many now come near
You say you're a better person now Because you have known me That I was one who showed you how To set your heart-song free
And now that you have told me this In light of your heart-song It wasn't I who gave it to you 'Twas in you all along
Although I've always loved you, friend Somehow I let you know For now you see within yourself What I saw long ago.
Author's Notes: I've learned that sometimes learning to love yourself is difficult for many reasons. Sometimes, you just don't know what there is to love about yourself; other times, you know things about yourself but you don't believe those things are special enough to consider. It's almost like people sometimes think they have to have some sort of outstanding and special quality in order to feel that they qualify for love, and that all the other ordinary qualities aren't really enough. And even worse, people who have low self-esteem focus so much on their flaws and faults that they feel hopeless that any of their other better qualities will ever compensate for them.
But, I have learned that people of all ages have self-esteem issues, not just people who are in their teens or in adolescence. Somehow, people get the idea that if they are not particularly outstanding, that they are unnoticable. But did you know that that is a lie? It is.
Any given ordinary qualities that most everyone has are perhaps not what is special. But how the person uniquely expresses their ordinary qualities is very special. This poem is about how common, ordinary qualities expressed in a unique way are noticed and appreciated -- but they have first to be expressed.
It is quite common for me to meet many people who tell me I am an especially nice and kind person, but the truth is, I'm just noticing and accepting them for who they are so that they won't feel pressured to put on any masks. And without exception, and without the mask, everyone I ever meet is someone for whom I am inspired to feel a sense of sincere admiration and caring. But the mask has got to go. I'll take the bad with the good. I simply won't have it any other way.
