Fooling the World (Fooling Yourself)

I did set you free
And now you hate me
Saying I will get tit for tat;
For you can maintain
Ignorance of your pain,
Your hate for me helps you do that.
Just one single word
That we have both heard,
It's "ignorance", which is bliss;
And if that were true
I'm certain that you
Would feel so much better than this.
And all that you say
To ruin my day
To fuel this ongoing debate;
There is no effect
Not one you expect,
For "my" heart is not full of hate.
So I'll give you space
To fall from false grace
Your happiness, portrayed and feign;
You will soon one day see
You don't really hate me
When you're ready to face your pain.
Author's Notes: I wrote this poem in late 2001 about someone I broke up with in early 2001.
