No Longer Hurting Myself (to fight back)

I once thought I'd take my own life,
The decision was mine to make;
It gave me a sense of control,
Even peace, for my life to take.
My mood was suddenly lightened,
And my energy increased a lot too;
When I actually thought I would do it
For my initiative was there and true.
Though I mostly revealed my intentions
There were times I told not a soul;
I would simply go out and do it,
For I knew of no other goal.
I did not have all of the answers
But there is one thing I can now say:
I was never, never, never alone!
Which is why I am here to this day.
No longer recycling my destruction within,
Finally rid of that precarious knack!
That power won't hurt me again,
I don't hurt myself anymore, to fight back.
Author's Notes: I dug up this poem from a notebook that I had as far back as high school. I didn't date the original version of the poem, which was perhaps between 1989 and 1992, but I did update it a little before posting it here.
I may always have a tendency to hurt myself before hurting others who have hurt me, but honestly, the older I get, the less it happens. Getting older really does have its perks :-) because generally, people realize their time is running out. :-) No more time for the nonsense that once was, better hurry up and start living for a change! :-D
No, seriously, I think life really does get better as the years pass. I mean, it's not overly-wonderful, but yeah, it really does get better as time goes by. :-) Wait a minute... am I repeating myself here? Yep. I'm repeating myself here. ;-)
