The Tempest

I stand alone
in a dark canyon.
The high mountains ringing me in are dark and foreboding.
The light filtering down is murky, hazy. Very diminished; as if on the verge of perpetual twilight.
I have walked this canyon before.
I know its shape, contours.
My footsteps, and the beat of my heart, are the only sounds I hear.
I left the path, through this loathsome place, years ago.
I had not expected to return, but; I am here again.
I see no hope, no light.
The sky above is clouded, perpetually. Embellishing, even deeper, a feeling of despair.
Now, I am back within this solitary prison.
Will I not be freed from its burdensome yoke?
Who will protect the protector?
Who will rescue the rescuer?
Who will assist this warrior, when he has fallen?
Ultimately, who will dare to love me?
I have not fallen, yet.
The wind that blows through this desolate surrounding,
echoes the mournful cry within my soul.
Yet with each passing moment, I become weaker. Every effort is more labored.
It is the tempest of this prison.
It seduces those to travel its path, when they scream for solitude.
But, once allowed in, it saps the life-force of the traveler, as a vampire drains its victim of blood.
Nothing is left. Utter despair replaces hope.
Vitality is replaced with overwhelming exhaustion.
The very fire of the soul, is replaced with an event horizon that pulls its victims towards self-implosion.
I have resisted its caress.
I have resisted its twisted game of giving hope that someone will rescue them, then revealing to its victim, all was an illusion.
I have resisted.
Yet, I have returned to this place.
To this abyss of agony.
I know I will not survive in its grasp for long.
