A TRIBUTE TO RONALD MCELMURRY
"ROOSTER"
MY FRIEND....
HE WAS THE EPITOME OF THAT WORD.
HE WAS SO BLESSED WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
AT TIMES, HE COULD NOT SEE THE OBVIOUS SET BEFORE HIM.
NOR COULD HE RELEASE HIMSELF TO BECOME MORE.
YET, HE WAS MY FRIEND.
HIS EXPERIENCES MOLDED HIM INTO WHAT HE WAS; A WARRIOR.
HIS EXPERIENCES IN VIETNAM WERE HEART-RENDING. HIS EXPERIENCES BACK IN THE UNITED STATES, EVEN MORE SO.
YET, AS A WARRIOR, HIS SPIRIT NEVER DIED. NOR DID HIS CONVICTIONS.
HE WAGED A BATTLE DAILY WITH HIMSELF, ALTHOUGH IT WAS NEVER SEEN BY THE OUTSIDER. EXCEPT, I SAW THE WAR HE FOUGHT.
I TOOK HIM IN.
WE WOULD TALK, SHARE EXPERIENCES, LAUGH, CRY, GET ANGRY, BECOME CALM.
HE TAUGHT ME MORE ABOUT LIFE IN THAT SHORT TIME WE KNEW EACH OTHER, THAN I HAVE LEARNED IN ALL OF MY YEARS.
HE TAUGHT ME IT WAS OK TO CRY, AND TO LIVE LIFE TO ITS FULLEST.
HE TAUGHT ME ABOUT PROTECTING WHAT WAS IMPORTANT, AND WHAT TO DISCARD, WHEN IT BECAME TIME.
HIS HEART, COMPASSION, WERE IMMENSE.
HIS SENSE OF DUTY; OBVIOUS.
HIS HONOR, UNQUESTIONABLE.
HE MADE AN UNSPOKEN REQUEST OF ME, WHEN IT CAME HIS TIME TO LEAVE THIS EARTHLY PLAIN. I, UNQUESTIONABLY, MADE SURE THAT THAT REQUEST WOULD BE HONORED WHEN THE TIME CAME. NO MATTER THE DISTANCE, OR THE VAST EXPANSE OF TIME.
IN 1994, IT WAS TIME.
I HONORED HIS UNSPOKEN REQUEST; THAT OF A FALLEN HERO.
I STILL LAMENT FOR MY FRIEND, MY TEACHER.
YET I KNOW, HE IS WITH ME.
IN MY HEART.
ADVISING AND PATIENT.
FOR YOU, ROOSTER, THIS POEM IT DEDICATED TO YOU AND ALL OF THE VIETNAM VETERANS THAT FOUGHT FOR US, AND WAS LEFT WANTING.
YOUR SACRIFICE WAS NOT IN VAIN, NOBLE WARRIOR.
REST NOW, IN PEACE, MY FRIEND.
YOU WILL BE WITH ME, ALL OF MY DAYS.
Author's Notes: He was my friend: and unlike just a friend, he was called away to another duty. I miss my friend. He never let me down.
