A Tribute to our Veterans.

Age Group: Adult
The call.
It came.
Whether by radio, newspaper, courier, mailman, or public service statement, it came.
You answered the call.
The call made by our country.
To right terrible wrongs.
To aid those under siege;
by those that would suppress, and murder, innocents.
To free those that lost their freedom.
And to bring those responsible, to justice.
You underwent basic training.
Made friends.
Trained under less than ideal, conditions.
You became tougher, stronger.
Honed and tested.
Ready.
Now, you were ready for battle.
And it came.
Battle.
The test of man.
The test of a man.
Fear.
You believed you were tougher than nails.
You could bend armor plating with your bare hands, because you believed it.
But fear, kept you alive.
However, it did not keep all alive.
Yes, many fell. A great many.
Friends, acquaintances, comrades, commanding officers.
Many that you looked up to. Took orders from.
No, they did not return.
You did.
And that is what is most important.
Why?
Because, your friends would want you to go on.
Flanders field, Arlington, Gettysburg, and all other cemeteries,
Are where we honor our fallen comrades.
Because you live, you honored your friends' sacrifice.
And you carried on the battles.
And you emerged, victorious.
Victorious?
What about Vietnam?
An "unpopular" war, they called it.
Yet, despite that fact, you went.
You fought.
You survived.
Those that fell, made a sacrifice for you and others.
It matters not, that it was a hated war.
Your country called you to duty.
You went, fought, and lived.
Veterans.
You have a sacred place in our hearts.
Your sacrifice was great.
Your pain, greater still.
We honor you, and our fallen, with a humbleness and respect that cannot be spoken.
It is felt.
Deeply and greatly.
It is the lump in our throats, the tightness in our chest, the tears that come unbidden, and the fire in our eyes.
Your honor.
Your pride.
Your service to this country.
We honor.
