Keeping the Peace (both Inner and Outer)

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Feelings run deep Relations to keep With evils necessary; But have no fear Just listen, dear Although it seems contrary:
To smile and wave Could be to save Relations where pain lingers. Keep the trust, hon' Don't use just "one" But wave with ALL your fingers.
If response is nice Keep this advice I've given and you've heard; If response is mean Then just come clean And thrust them one good bird.
Author's Notes: You have the power to be nice to mean people. They also have the power to be nice back to you. Therefore, if they choose not to respond favorably to your open door with a sincere welcome mat, then sure, slam the door.
They don't have to be nice to you just because you were nice to them. On the other hand, slamming the door in their face may be the only thing they will understand. Will they attempt to apologize by knocking at the door and waiting patiently for you to open it again? People don't always say the words, "I'm sorry" -- so you may need to recognize when they are making an attempt to communicate an apology without actually saying the words, by "knocking" at the door you just slammed. If so, then YOU get to choose whether you will open the door. If they never come back, or if you choose to keep the door locked, then at least you're safe and sound inside your comfort zone, and you'll both keep right on living.
All poetic symbolism, of course. Even the part about giving the bird to someone. While I myself have literally done it dozens of times because I was certain that it was necessary, I'm not suggesting that anyone else should do it unless they believe in and are willing to take total responsibility for their own actions. ;-)
"the bird" -- An obscene gesture of anger, defiance, or derision made by pointing or jabbing the middle finger upward. Source: dictionary.reference.com/browse/bird
