At One Time©

At one time, I believed.
I believed that there was more to this universe than just myself
I believed sharing was open and without risk
I believed caring was given freely, and I cared a lot
I believed the warmth of compassion was a strength, not a weakness
At one time, I trusted.
I trusted my innermost thoughts, without knowing the consequences
I trusted my darkest secrets, on a lark that they would be kept secret
I trusted my fantasies-dreams, not believing that they would become nightmares
At one time, I gave.
I gave all that I had to give, not suspecting that it would soon be a demand
I gave up on certain ideas and beliefs, unbeknownst that that was a fools’ errand
I gave emotions free reign, disbelieving as I saw them ripped apart
At one time, I loved.
And I shall love never, forever more.
