On Middle Age, Part 2

Age Group: Adult
I once gave in to social fears
Perfection was the key;
Each hair, detail, and style for years
Above the needs of me.
Though I was not alone in this
The others did the same;
False competition isn't bliss
When no one wins the game.
Taking in attention vast,
Expecting nothing less;
Perfection lagging to the past
And starting to digress.
Attention different does evolve
My peers are aging too;
Improved and well-informed resolve
Let's just be me and you.
Tight-fitting clothes still look as good
But now they aren't real;
Can't even breathe the way I should
No comfort there to feel.
(Though I admit a purpose served
Is there in time of need;
So emphasized and undeserved,
Tight jeans will do that deed.)
I like to make my hair look nice,
Done once each time I shower;
Yes once, just once, not twice or thrice,
Five minutes, not an hour.
Celebrities and superstars,
They're simply people too;
Past wounds becoming vested scars
To keep it real and true.
The mind and body ever shift,
The world has fewer places;
Acceptance is a wondrous gift
As aging has its graces.
And most of all is how I feel
Now seeing what's in store;
For now I know that I can heal
Much better than before.
To focus now on living well
Much different than my past;
And many stories I can tell,
Relationships that last.
Not perfect like my younger years
I'm certain all is fine;
No longer driven by my fears
And now, my life is mine.
