To Have A Good Life (Just Work At It)

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

A message today came to me
As simple as it can be:
Our life will be good
But do what we should
Just work at it, and you will see.

Author's Notes: "Everyone can have a good life, just work at it." The quote is not precise as I am only going by memory, but you get the idea. These are the words of Doris Eaton, who is currently 102 years old. She is the oldest living Ziegfeld Follies girl, and is also known for her lifelong career in professional theater and dancing. Well, there was a while there that her life was very difficult and she couldn't find work (was it the Great Depression? I'm still going by memory, but I think that was the cause. I'll soon be reading up on the many online articles about her, and her life.) And even though I do not know her personally, she did recently appear on the "Discover Oklahoma" series on PBS and, I might add with a glimmer of pride, she lives less than 30 miles from me. :-)

Addendum: Doris Eaton Travis (March 14, 1904 – May 11, 2010) passed at the age of 106. May she rest well, and be remembered with respect for her legacy and the beautiful person she was. Her comment on, "To have a good life, just work at it" was simply an impromptu reply during her PBS interview, but her words of wisdom ring true for everyone.
