Integrity

Sometimes it's hard
To accept the Truth
Or at least what's believed to be true.
But deceiving en masse
Claiming druthers be law?
All is lost if that's what they do.
For the nature of Truth
Goes beyond one's desire
Important or not, it's the same.
What they "want" it to be
Simply isn't, you see,
Disagreements are not grounds for blame.
Now is now (not the past)
They'll learn one day at last
They harmed innocents each time they vented.
They'll believe what they want;
But I won't, it's not true.
For the Truth simply can't be invented.
If it's power they want
Then it's power they'll have
Three times less power gained when they steal.
To create is to earn,
And to earn is to have;
I shall only have that which is real.
Author's Notes: I wrote this poem with one specific idea in mind, but then I read it again thinking of other ideas, in fact, even from several reverse-perspectives. It seemed to apply any way I looked at it. Oh, just take your choice: certain religious groups? certain political groups? It doesn't matter, as the pattern is nearly always the same for any groups that oppress others for the sake of power.
But I know one thing for sure, that power stolen from others may one day be taken back with a vengeance. That's not necessarily a good thing, as the vengeance aspect will prevent a successful retrieval, and in my experience it usually means that the oppressed are behaving just as badly, or worse than those who oppressed them have behaved. That never works. Hopefully a little peer-checking will temper any disastrous results.
Religion and politics are just two sides of the same coin, as they are simply two distinct methods of governing the behaviors and influencing the beliefs of people en masse. The coin shall always be flipped, "Heads I win, tails you lose." (Did you catch the insidious caveat?) The problem occurs when people as a group are not also allowed to be the individuals they are by nature. But they will anyway, if they have developed integrity.
