Pseudoscientific Know-It-Alls

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Know-it-alls may know a lot They've studied quite a bit To analyze the whole wide world That they'll may make sense of it
And then somewhere along the line The learning starts to wane They use their finite knowledge Infinitely to explain
To know it all means not to learn To cease being aware; They've learned their stuff so well That they can't see what's really there.
Author's Notes: I wrote this poem just to vent a little bit about a conversation I had with a couple friends last Halloween. The conversation didn't go so well because those friends of mine insisted that science has "proven" the existence of, well, ghosts.
I told them that while there MAY VERY WELL be such thing as ghosts, the existence of ghosts has never, never, never been "proven", and certainly not by using the scientific method. They didn't even agree with each other on the definition of a ghost. Even though my friends followed careful procedures and recorded everything in their ghostly explorations, it does not guarantee that I, or anyone else, could follow the same procedures and always arrive at the same results.
Whatever they were doing, and however they were doing it, and whatever results they came up with, it wasn't science. But at least it sounded like they had a lot of fun doing it. ;-)
pseudoscience - a system of theories, assumptions, and methods erroneously regarded as scientific ("Just as using a calculator doesn't make you a mathematician, using a scientific instrument doesn't make you a scientist.")
simulacrum - an insubstantial semblance ("That cloud in the sky looks like a bunny rabbit!" [but it doesn't mean that it IS a bunny rabbit]) .
folie ŕ deux - the sharing of delusional ideas by two people who are closely associated
"Mysteries are a dime a dozen. The explanations are what's valuable."
