Painful Memories

Age Group: Adult
The past is the past.
And it's all someone's fault.
So long ago, and I remember it all.
Painful memories I want to forget.
They have always been.
I no longer fathom life without them.
Ghosts of grief and sadness remain.
They remain to torment me.
Is their only intent to cause me pain?
"Go away" has never worked.
No avoidance, no command has ever worked.
Hatred has strengthened them and made them worse.
Perhaps there is reason to this madness.
Perhaps internal war is not the answer.
Perhaps those ghosts are aspects of myself.
For once, I face them without hatred.
For once, I see they are suffering too.
For once, I embrace them and admit:
"I don't want to fight any more."
They reply,
"We only wanted your forgiveness.
Good-bye, my friend."
