Cure For A Broken Heart

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

I want a sundae, topped with fudge. A fudge to last past Saturday night! And I'd like to know It's more than chocolate syrup at first sight. I want a sundae topped with fudge.
And I want the, the fudge poured everywhere! Can't seem to find fudge topping... Fudge swirls... Fudge squares... And my ice cream bowl's completely filled with: just air... I need a sundae topped with fudge.
Will my sundae come this evening? I'll keep on believing, Every minute, every hour, every day. 'Cause I'm hoping to discover A certain kind of lover Who will make ice cream my way!
And my spoon needs fudge swirls To enfold Hot fudge so warm on ice cream, vanilla, So cold. And I'll even have whipped cream AND nuts, AND a CHERRY if I'm bold! I want a sundae topped with fudge.
Oh yeah...
No, I don't want you to make Me a chocolate milkshake, Don't even want a chocolate birthday cake. It's MY way -- or NO way...
'Cause I don't want nuthin' baby, But I want a sundae topped with fudge.
Author's Notes: If you ever listened to country music in the late 80's and early 90's, the pattern of my poem may seem vaguely familiar. It's based on the beautiful country ballad "Sunday Kind of Love" sung by Reba McEntire in 1988. I have converted the lyrics into a satire that is ironically intended to be every bit as serious, both metaphorically and literally, as it is humorously dramatic. I actually wrote it sometime back in 1994, but to me both the original version and my satirical version have merit. The original version is about the kind of love only an innocent-minded person would wish for, and my version is what some people do once they realize that love isn't always what it's cracked up to be, and ice cream (and other delights such as chocolate and cheesecake) are much more gratifying and readily available. Bon Apetit! :-)
