Take A Break Now, Says My Cat

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

I sit here typing up a storm
Before my computer screen;
A quiet sound, my cat walks in,
"Meow, you have been seen."

Upon the floor she pauses, stops,
Next to me where I sit;
She knowns not what computers are
And can't make sense of it.

What could it be upon that screen
Diverting me from her?
Her front paws reach to touch my leg,
A scratched ear makes her purr.

One glance toward clicking noises from
The keyboard 'neath my fingers;
"It gets more scratching than do I!"
An inch my way she lingers...

I'm focused on the monitor,
"He just won't seem to budge!"
Adjusting closer to my lap
She gives one gentle nudge --

So I look down into her eyes,
As hers stare into mine;
"That's just the clue which I have sought, "
Intentions so benign...

In one fell swoop she takes a leap
Into my lap and purrs;
I cannot reach the keyboard now,
My attention is now hers.

I cannot even reach the mouse,
Her assertions have increased;
"I'd like attention if you please, "
My computer work has ceased.

I glance at the computer clock
Two hours since have passed,
"It's time you take a break again,
And pet me now, at last!"

An ear scratch, scratchy, scratchy-scratch,
Light stroke atop her head,
Extending out her furry chin
When I scratch there instead;

And down the back now here we go
Yes, scratchy-scratch, my my...
Now scratch the behind really good,
Tail pointing to the sky;

"Okay, I'm done, now I'll get down
To rest here on the floor."
Right next to me she falls asleep,
And my work begins once more.

Author's Notes: True story. I am required to cease all computer work about once every two hours because my cat reminds me it's time to take another break. But what a most pleasant reminder, indeed. :-)
