Garden of Love

We met long ago on a mystical night,
Things were not going your way.
I offered a smile and a listening ear,
You told me I brightened your day.
You wanted much more but it was too soon,
I told you to wait a bit longer.
You were not ready for someone like me
Until you could make yourself stronger.
Several months passed, and we became friends,
You told me that I was your rock;
I revealed to you who I was deep inside,
My heart heard your love trying to knock.
Beginning to feel that you loved me for me,
Your love I could truly believe,
Vulnerable yet safe at the very same time,
And wearing my heart on my sleeve,
I finally gave in and my heart became yours,
I never knew someone so kind.
But I was at last nothing more than a prize,
What caused you to change your mind?
You told me whatever I did was all good,
With me you would never get hurt.
My phone doesn't make any hint of a sound
And my love has been cast to the dirt.
Perfectly satisfied being "just friends"
I bet you would like that a lot.
Moral support while you find someone else?
That sure is some nerve you've got.
I'll sow one more seed in my garden of love
As I reap from my garden of friends.
My attention will go to that tiny new sprout...
I know you will miss me by then.
Author's Notes: Sometimes love just doesn't work out. One of the hardest lessons for me to learn was that helping someone out of a rough spot in their life doesn't necessarily mean they will remain friends with you once they have moved out of their misery. I guess that's why friendship must be given as a free gift, and not one that expects to be repaid in full.
