She Wasn't There

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

All I know for sure is, she wasn't there...
so when I stopped by her cubicle it was so,
so dark inside.

The combination
of the sudden shocking disappointment
and the deafening silence emanating from the cubicle
compelled me to place my hand lovingly
over my heart
as I closed my eyes,
long enough to regain my composure
which had been so unexpectedly
and unforeseeably compromised
to some unknown geometric proportion.

But alas,
I did not make a sound because
I did not want to disturb any of my colleagues
who were hard at work,
no doubt unaware
that I was suffering inside,
only feet away and certainly
within a visible and audible range.

Taking a deep breath,
I turned around and held my head high,
knowing that it would be difficult
to hide the embarrassment
of having almost called out her name --
aloud for all to hear --
before knowing for sure
whether she was indeed sitting inside her cubicle
intently studying
the contents displayed by the monitor,
and occasionally moving the mouse
and typing a group of related keystrokes.

Certain that any observant person
would be able to see
through my plastic facial expression
to the expression that urged to be displayed,
I knew that there ought to be someone --
anyone --
that would feel a drop of sympathy
for me
and attempt to reach out.

I was wrong.
No one,
not even one person,
even offered to buy me
a hot fudge sundae,
not even a single dip...

And so I sat,
returned to my desk,
looking around at each bare wall
of my cubicle,
one at a time,
until I had absorbed
the beige color from each wall
into my mood.

And then,
after taking one final deep breath
and letting the air from my lungs
and the worries in my mind flow out
slowly and steadily,
I was ready to begin working again.
