The "High" Priestess

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Beloved High Priestess, You don't know me But they said I should come to you. Your loving support Help me search my soul For hidden answers within that are true.
High Priestess, dear, Before we begin There's something I'd like to ask. Forgive me, but... Are you qualified To take on such a task?
I thought you would be, Well, I don't know, But your make-up is caked on like lard. Wearing two different shoes A loud psychedelic dress Like a peacock posing in a barnyard.
I pictured you plainer, But all that jewelry! Twelve rings is more than enough. Your missing a tooth, And is that a spitoon? Filled and covered in snuff.
In that crystal ball A "spot" in my future? Such words, how can you utter? I have a slight hunch From your sandwich at lunch That spot is just peanut butter.
You lit just a bit Of your special incense To proceed... but now I don't wanna. I see why they call you The "high" priestess, That incense is marijuana.
Well thanks for your time But I've changed my mind You passed out, so your chance is blown. High Preistess, my dear, You taught me one thing, Hidden answers are found on my own.
Author's Notes: This poem is a statement on how some lessons in life need to be learned on one's own. I have always been skeptical about titles (for example, "High Priestess", but any title for that matter) because some people abuse them in an effort to compensate for parts of their life that still need work. For me in my life, I have found that titles are only guidelines, or labels if you will, that are used when there just isn't any other way to describe a person's focus in life. But in the end, one learns that sometimes a title is something a person is striving for, rather than something a person already is.
It is up to each individual to decide on their own how relevant someone else's title is in their life. Everyone has something unique to contribute, and I have found that focusing on who a person truly is on the inside, and accepting them for who they are, and encouraging them to be more of who they already are, has been the answer to the question of effective relations with others.
And in my own life, when I have done this, it somehow seemed that the person's "title", if any, diminished in light of the magnitude of everything wonderful (and even things not so wonderful) that made up who the person was. I guess a title is just too limiting for me, but at least it's a start. ;-)
