If You Don't Want Me...

I'm sorry to have imposed myself in your life
But each time we touched was much better than before.
You made me feel that I could do anything
But this love is now something I can't help any more.
I put up with your indecisiveness because I loved you
But it never did seem to matter how much I cared.
I wanted more than a "hint" that you liked me too,
But you had no desire to even see how I fared.
When I feel your presence all around me
How can I know for sure you're not here?
Our closeness was once apparent to all
And your memory is still so clear.
I can't make you feel anything you don't already
Perhaps my dreams of you will always haunt me.
But know this one fact, before you go on your way:
You can't HAVE me, if you don't want me.
Author's Notes: A followup to the poem, "Garden of Love", this poem is about the phase of anger I went through after helping someone out of a rough spot in their life only to find that they didn't want to continue on an intimate level after their phase of need was over. This person and I are no longer friends, but we are at least civil to each other. And you know what? This person fell right back into his depression not long after we parted ways. Perhaps he was smarter than I was in terms of "relationship smarts", knowing that he needed to do much more work on his life on his own, and that it would just be too much for me to handle over an extended period of time. He allowed me to move on, because I guess, he knew I would be happier.
