My Own Needs

Age Group: Adult
So humbly here I sit in awe
So much that life can bring,
Degrees, experience and wisdom gained,
I still know not one thing.
I haven't written poetry
In quite a long long while
Past times I wrote day in, day out
When I always had a smile
Though sometimes it was angry,
And sometimes so perturbed
And sometimes diplomatic
Though I felt so disturbed.
I don't know what to write about
This moment is a blur
I think and think and think some more
Though nothing is quite sure.
Sometimes I guess it's simply life
Through phases I go through
I never knew that I never knew
Some things I now find true.
I always knew, the more I knew
The less that I would know
And so with less, and more as well
Through life I simply go.
An angel here, an angel there
Encountered now and then
One tiny little kindness act
Life's worth it once again.
And yet the things I learned to now
Are things that keep me sure
I don't know much, but what I know
Help me to feel secure.
The others show me reverence
For answers to everything
And yet it seems for them, I "know."
For me, not even a thing.
The answers always come to me
When I search in my soul
For others I can feel their pain
For me, I pay the toll
I wonder: If I cared enough
For ME, which feels so strange
Perhaps it's what I'd recommend
To others what to change
Oh yes I know the answer to
The things that I an writing
To unlearn all self-sacrifice
And simply stop self-fighting
An angel once revealed to me
To thine own self be true
Keep learning more, though knowing less
For once, just think of "you"
No matter where I tend to look,
No matter whom I see
Somehow all others' needs appear
More than what I call "me"
So humbly here I sit in awe
So much that life can bring,
Degrees, experience and wisdom gained,
I still know not one thing.
Author's Notes: Maybe this will inspire those who give more than they receive to give to self, or save some for self, once in a while, and by all means, not feel guilty about it.
