A Bard's Preface

by Thomas Harris
 Age Group: Adult

Hear Me! This, my robe, wrap I right 'round me, Words now recount of long-lost days. Heron wings from tongue ascending Draw willow-ears to water prais'd. On my lips mead-song o'er grace flows-- Veil of Unknowing bard-light disclose. To matron and patron, praise-blessing prize Be given you by bard bless'd eyes. Dust from mem'ry now be shaken, Light be found where was deep night. From mundane world you now awaken And real vision become your sight. Song and tale and verse be treasure, Heard by all for bane or pleasure, Recounted here for Ancients' sake. Word-journey now with this soul take.
Author's Notes: This poem is being prepared for a Summer Solstice Gorsedd for the Yahoo group SilverBirch. Comment is welcome. The phrase 'Hear Me!' is the old skald's call, the equivalnt of a Celtic Bard sounding the silver branch hung with apple-form bells to quiet the crowd before words were spoken. The feathered cloak in line 2 is also a bard sign, and so is the heron. The 'matron and patron' at one time would have referred to the lord and lady of the house, but in the current setting it would most likely occur in reference to matron and patron deities. 'Song and tale and verse' refer to the three traditional bardic forms, and 'word-journey' refers to the more or less guided visualization/shamanic journey that is initiated by good bardic activity. The purpose of this peice is to precede a longer bardic performance, and is written to provide for the introduction that bards used to allow for themselves--sometimes even mentioning their lineage back seven generations--and for their patrons.
