Friends In Need

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

A friend in need Is a friend, "indeed" But that's not what they meant, I'm sure. 'Cause when you're feeling grand Lend that helping hand, So-called "friends" ALWAYS come back for "more".
No, a friend in need Is a friend in "deed", Not "indeed", but in "deed", my dear. For it's true what I heard Actions ARE louder than words, Friends give BACK, though in need, staying "near".
Dishing out hard-earned money, Just a band-aid, how funny! When the real cause is such a deep wound. Suck it up, honey child, 'Cause my temper gets wild, Beggars' sob stories shan't make me swooned.
Yet one needy behest As a simple request I can spare that, and ask for your "thanks". Ask to "borrow" my money, And I'll show you the honey, In beehives, fool -- borrow from banks!
No, a friend in need Is a friend in "deed", Not "indeed", but in "deed" -- always near. I have hard times too, So if it's not all about "you", Let's be friends in "deed", my dear.
Author's Notes: Way back sometime in the 1960's, before I was born, my Dad wrote down a list of all the people's names he thought were his friends. Keep in mind this was way before anything like "caller ID" -- back then there was no way of knowing who was calling or where they were calling from.
So he called each name on his list, from home, but he told them he was in jail and needed $200 to get out.
Those who could not or did not help him, he crossed out their name on the list. When he was done, there were only three names left on the list, though he started out with about 20 or 25.
"These three are my real friends, " he said, when he told me the story, "so these three are the only ones I will return my true friendship to. The rest of them are not worth my time."
A harsh lesson for my Dad. And one that I have learned in my own way, in the present day, for myself.
