Lamentations of Mormon Stupidity

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

I am so pissed,
I thought I had a friend
From high school, a Mormon
You don't want to know the end.

Admirably he posed
The question, misconstrued
His eyes, one viewpoint
My own, a lifetime viewed --

Yes, I am GAY
Though not with your cause
No wonder all my knowledge
Has given you such pause

The HUMANS of that church
That I once grew up in
Not Mormon, but Southern Baptist (!) eww!
They still love me, with ZERO chagrin!

When will I stop being cursed
When majority loves me so
Still the one, so blinded
He sees not where LIFE can go.

And the others? They accept.
My GAYness, they just "knew".
If the Christian God exists,
Dear Mormon, it's not through YOU.

If the Christian God exists,
It is through high school friends who know --
The difference between "stupid"
And the way that lets life flow.

Author's Notes: I truly hate the word "stupidity". I mean, the word "ignorance" means you don't know and need to learn. "Stupidity" means you already know but choose to do something else.

I need way more than someone lighting a white candle for this. It's not about my spirituality, or whether I believe in the Christian God or not, I am under attack because I am Gay! From someone I went to highschool with, it's not like I am wrong because I'm not Mormon, it's like I'm wrong because I'm simply Gay!!!

Okay, so Goddess and God are less important to him. My Gayness, in both political and religious terms, are what's important.

And all I wanted was to just love the one man I ever loved. To not be a second-class citizen paying first-class taxes.

I never did anything wrong. Is my life destined to the "Mormon Propo$ition, Equality for Some"? I should hope not.

If you care to, pray for me. Or cast a spell for me. Or whatever you please. Just know, blacks were freed from that awful unrighteous slavery which the thought makes me vomit. Women now have the right to vote, and I just can't see why it was ever any other way. Now the LGBT community suffers as second-class citizens, paying first-class taxes.

Pray for us. Please?

Update: October 21, 2010. Well this just goes to show how damn presumtuous and insecure I am. The very Mormon friend I was referring to just wrote me a response to the email I sent him.

He doesn't hate me at all. Why would he even respond if I were not worth the time of day? I didn't give him enough credit as an INDIVIDUAL, I only superimposed "religion" on top of his own "individuality". Boy was I stupid.

So I'm not going to delete this poem. I'm going to keep it "as is", but with this addendum. Don't be so caught up in your own beliefs that you don't give others who have different (or opposing) beliefs a "real chance" to accept you.

For me, I am seeing now that it is not so much a matter of "religion" as it is a matter of "human beings being exactly who they are supposed to be."

And also, I have learned that the Mormon religion is somewhat of an outcast itself -- some Christians think that Mormons are not "real Christians". Perhaps we share more common ground than we realize, although it is surely for different reasons.

UPDATE AGAIN: November 1, 2010. I take everything back. This Mormon "friend" somehow filtered my civil statements that gave him the benefit of the doubt and my gratitude for his correspondence as "sarcastic". Well, that was his filter, a statement on his own behalf. He blocked me from ever writing to him again online. I'm beginning to see the Athiests' line of reasoning, when they call religious people "weaklings". I don't think I will become an Athiest, but the Athiests really do have a strong handle on certain religious concepts.
