Not All Sweats...In Rooms of Steamy Willow

Not all sweats are held in rooms of steamy willow.
Some are held in homes and back yards,
And the fire is not of wood, but of will.
And the sweat is not of water, but word.
And the night is not of sky, but soul.
And the vision is not induced, but indelved.
And the purpose is not of spirituality, but spirit.
Not all council fires are held among one mind.
Some are held in quiet confusion,
And the question is not might, but silent.
And the topic is not future, but fear.
And the day is not time, but tender.
And the speaking is not staged, but stationed.
And the thinking is not planned, but panned.
And they call up people on the spur of the moment,
And tell them that the world is only small
And there is a time to pack and move
Away from everything, want to or not
And we fail to understand.
Author's Notes: In Oklahoma, there is a very close relationship between Native American spirituality and Pagan spirituality. The imagery in this poem reflects that.
