No One Knows It All

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

I once made a little wand
And was pleased in joyful song,
But took pause when some know-it-alls
Told me that I did it wrong.

A little chalice made from clay
I once made for my craft,
But the "know-it-alls" said I did it wrong
Taking pleasure as they laughed.

A quaint athame I could afford
That I liked, I bought it for me,
But the know-it-alls said it did not count
Since 'twas purchased, not created, to be.

I crafted a pantacle with meaning, and
I did so as best as I could,
Still the know-it-alls said my symbols were wrong,
And I used the wrong kind of wood.

So one night at my altar, one candle lit,
I looked at my tools of the trade,
Wondering how know-it-alls really knew it all,
To assign me some failing grade.

And I wondered, if they really know it all,
Why do they always complain?
The answer for them shall remain theirs alone;
But my spells work... how oddly arcane...

Author's Notes: I wrote this poem for people who are still trying to learn the craft but are unfortunately surrounded by others who put down their efforts. Those people are indeed teachers, at least in one simple way that they are indirectly teaching the lesson of self-confidence. No one knows it all, and it's not very nice for them to put down the efforts of people who are genuinely struggling to to their best.

Think of it this way. Suppose you and I were climbing a tree, and I was in the branch above you reaching down my hand to you, offering to help you climb higher. (The people who are Xena fans will recognize this lesson from Season One of the series.) I tell you to "Have faith!" but the moment you reach for my hand, I pull it away from you. On the surface it looks like I am telling you to have faith in me to help you climb to the higher branch, but that was not the lesson at all. The lesson was to "have faith" in yourself, because you really don't need to depend on me to climb higher. All you need is the faith in yourself, because you can do it without anyone else's help (and also, you can do it yourself when others are thwarting your efforts by making you think you need them) .

Doing it yourself really is the best way to learn what works for "you".
