Age Group: Adult
Love in platonic innocence,
Two like souls once combine;
No worries of the everyday life,
A friend who loves, is mine.
And then we grow some more, and more,
Elementary school has passed,
Becoming separated thoughts --
Somehow, someway, they last.
The middle school and high school paths
Our younger selves grew wise:
New friends, new thoughts, identities;
Still distinguishing truth from lies.
My love for men established then,
Your love for "love", that's you --
But what is love, exactly, when
Any love there is, is true?
And twenty years have passed since then,
Adulthood captured us all --
With each our separate lives apart,
Life lessons rise and fall;
One day we are adults in time
Remembering things once passed
And now, today, like yesterday
We meet again at last.
We each have separate everyday lives,
Still, you're a friend of mine.
Though different reasons we each pursue
Our souls and paths combine.
For who you were and who I was
We both are still today
The friendship everlasting hearts
Though separate, it's the way.
And something brought us here again,
It all makes perfect sense --
Though different, our like souls combine
And as adults from childhood years
This one thing I must say:
Without each other's trusted care,
I'd never know the way.
Inside I want to shrivel up
And hide from this cruel world
To be forgotten evermore
Faith comes from one young girl...
(now we're barely 40-plus
And remember our younger years
You said that I was "good, " not "bad, "
The thought brings me to tears.
So thank you, friend, of years long passed
Your example I aspire to be;
'Cause I remembered you, my friend,
And... somehow... you remembered me.
Author's Notes: When a gay boy (underage, less than 18 for sure, ME back then) who doesn't even know he is gay because he hasn't event reached puberty falls in love with an elementary school girlfriend (Wendy) , only to learn for the first time twenty years after high school graduation that she is bisexual and understands what LOVE FOR ANOTHER HUMAN BEING TRULY MEANS, it's an incredible experience. I am that gay boy, and this poem is dedicated to Wendy. Let it be known to Wendy's WIFE that I shall never have any inappropriate designes on Wendy, that would be ridiculous and would violate my own personal code of conduct. I only said that for clarification, but they both know that. Besides, I have a husband of my own whom I love very very much.
There is no competition. I have a husband, and she has a very loving wife. And yet, somehow, the love in a platonic sense remains after all of these years. It is the most amazingly platonic sensation I have EVER sensed in my life. Interestingly, there are no sexual feelings attached. She's more like I have a SISTER that I always wanted.
At this moment in time while writing this, the Oklahoma clouds of forthcoming severe weather are blowing through my open window. It's the most mysterious time of the year (April through June, and sometimes December) .
Wendy, thank you for believing in me. I can't be whom I want to be for you in all respects, but I can be some smaller part of that. I am just glad the past was worth the present. You bring joy into my life.
