Why My Spells Didn't Work
by Phronesus Disegno
Age Group: Adult
I discovered why my spells didn't work
And it sure is good to know.
I purchased a needle and lots of thread,
By "craft" I thought they meant "sew".
I sewed me an image to behold:
A bee sitting on the ground,
Surrounded by a circular water-filled ditch
Protected from all around.
Before me the image in all its glory
With incense and candles so blue --
It did not matter whatever I did,
My spells never seemed to come true.
I framed the image upon my wall,
Knealt before it with spells of plea...
Now I've figured it out, what a genius I am!
I have to SAY "sew moated bee!" :-)
Author's Notes: Er, um, I mean "so mote it be!" Yes well, if you're smiling and rolling your eyes right about now, then as far as I'm concerned, my poetry has succeeded quite wonderfully. (wink-wink!)
Seriously, however, I would like to believe that Magick always works, and for some people it might mean changing their own personal definition of Magick into something that is more inclusive of "change" which happens every day, all around us, all the time. Such change is the result of the will and actions of many people going about their daily routines. Where do you fit in the grand scheme of things? What changes in your life can you take credit for, no matter how miraculous or mundane? What are your gifts? This is a good start for beginners.
I haven't actually read this anywhere, although I'm sure it's in books out there, I believe Magick really does tend to prioritize the actual needs in a person's life. For example, if you really need to learn more self-confidence but ask for money, which one to you suppose takes priority on a spiritual level? Or how about, if you need genuine healing after someone did you terribly wrong, and you cast a spell for revenge on that person, do you really think that affecting someone else's life takes priority over your own healing? I don't believe it should take priority, although you may very well send out something that has a measurable effect, later to recieve a life lesson you needed to learn as well, if you choose to learn it.
That's why it's so important to "know yourself", so that you can correlate what you are "really" sending out with any recognizable results that come in time. Christians may word such things as "sometimes God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers, " which is certainly viable. Not getting what you want is every bit as important to study (but perhaps not to over-analyze) as getting what you want. You "did" know that you need to do your part when casting a spell whenever you ask for the help of another (whether a friend, or a personal deity) , because they most likely won't want to serve it to you on a silver platter if all you do is sit on your behind and wait for it to just "happen". Well, it's not always the case, but hopefully you get the jist.
Personally, I believe that whatever is truly in your heart, or at the top of the list in your subconscious mind (as opposed to your much more rational and shielded conscious mind) is what goes out and comes back even if your intent was something else, provided that what your "real" needs are on a spiritual level are far more important than those other things. I also believe that with intense emotion, such as anger, can cause harm to others even when personal healing takes the priority, because emotion is certainly a powerful Magickal fuel.
This is one reason why it's not such a good idea to harm others with revenge or ask for money if only for money's sake because it is sort of "jumping the hierarchy" on the series of personal events that first need to occur in your own life, "after which" such acts of revenge or requests for money would seem to be accomplished in a much more level-headed, rational and realistic way that doesn't make personal problems even worse than they already are. It's all about self-respect and understanding that in the natural course of events will occur as a person ages and matures. There are so many younger people who are already wise and mature for their age, and there are others who still need more work for their age. It doesn't matter in the long run, so long as as at least "some" personal progress is achieved every single day of life, no matter how large or small.
Once you have achieved a point in your life when you feel pretty good and have learned to like yourself (and again, to "know yourself") would seem to be when other things that are, dare I say more "petty" according to the spiritual plane, can be more easily achieved. Use the "tools of the craft" all you want as long as they make you feel even "witchier". Some people find that they need them less and less as time passes. Everyone is different, and as far as I'm concerned, it's all good. ;-)
