Man To Self

I find it hard to understand
What causes one to be a man.
Height or strength,
Might or tenderness;
I feel the expectations
May be far too great,
For should it be that I
Be less than what
You expect of me, then
I would bear the loss of a man.
That's how I know
I am what is a man.
For a man is not a man at all
Lest he be a man to self.
