Samhain Stomp Dance

Shall I be a tear falling
To the ground, for all of thee?
O people, do the pipes play,
Play low, play low,
Or the harp lull us all away?
Shall I, mournful, sound the sound?
On this night, this dark night
When dance is stilled by our feet
In honor of the passing wind?
No night shall be bond
For what no day has brought nigh.
Veil of Veils, torn, deeply sundered,
What carols of the years dance by.
These unseen feet stomp out the rythym
Which we in seasons but fleeting see.
Quietly we note their passing.
We say 'yes' to you
'Yes' to what we have agreed
'Yes' to what our old Ancestors
Raised their hand to show belief.
vv-vv, vv-vv...
Now, when we still our feet...
Now, when we still our voice...
We wait for them in numinosity...
Weep not, for they've not passed...
Shed no tears, death won't last...
The Isles beyond to beckon away,
Our great quest goes on and on...
Between the steps of the dance,
Between the turning o' the Wheel.
Curious how the years part at Mystery,
At the changing of the sign..
Come, step lightly,
Jump across it...
This Veil of Changing Time.

Author's Notes: Vv-vv (pronounced uh-uh) is the Cherokee word for 'yes'. This poem honors both my Cherokee and my Irish ancestry and spiritual paths, marking how they sometimes intermingle in odd but deeply meaningful ways.
