Two-Spirit Comes Dancing

Now, walking and looking
Now, graceful and proud
Now, wary and wandering
Now, dancing and loud
Working, fast and focused
Working, late at night
Working, vision is dwindled,
Working, counting penny for penny
See Two-Spirit come dancing
Like wind over clouds of tall grass
With feet drumming heartbeats on earth
Lightly, it comes barely real
The journey, onward, regarding
Ended not for all that trod
For time has taken down warriors
And Two-Spirit weeps for them.
Comes Two-Spirit weaving wild reeds
Together, making them embrace
Each other, this kind, that kind,
Showing what is for us deep inside
Rising up,
Rising up...quiet as the soil
Deep as every water
Sacred as flame
Free seeking wind
Turns not away
From danger inherent in Truth.
Now, binding and healing
Now, time is unwinding
Now, bending and trying
Now, grasping and letting go
Working, while friends are dying
Working, while hope is crossing
Working, while youth is aging
Working, while voice is learning
See Two-Spirit come dancing
Like wind between city streets
With feet drumming heartbeats on concrete
...
Lightly, not seen complete
This journey onward, rewarding
The efforts of tears fall to dust
And trod below feet uncaring
Who say Two-Spirit is not
Weaving the Basket of Union
Within
Within...rising up as the soil in a mountain
Falling as warm springtime rain
Centering as warmth of hearth-fire
Cleansing as the fingers of wind
Turns not away
From danger of looking within
Author's Notes: A Two-Spirit is a gay, lesbian, bi or transgendered Native American, but the concept is shared by the greater glbt community as well. The Two-Spirit movement not only respects the special sacredness of our sexuality, but also the Native American traditions that saw Two-Spirits as teachers and medicine people. I'm glad to be a Two-Spirit, and embrace those others out there who aren't afraid to seek out the spirituality within them that respects their whole person.
